EARA: The Business Case of Regenerative Agriculture
“Restoring ecosystems while being productive and profitable is not a dream of some theory-lovers sitting in offices: it is what pioneer farmers are achieving on their fields throughout Europe. Let‘s support the dissemination of their techniques, for our common good.” - Dr. Yann Boulestreau, EARA Farmer, Scientist, Co-Founder AgSynergie and member of research team of the (2020-2024) landmark study ‘Farmer-led Research on Europe’s Full Productivity The Realities of Producing More and Better with Less - Place-based Innovation for the Good of All’.
Lucas Chauvin, Policy Officer at EARA
Roundtable on the business case of Regenerative Agriculture - Tuesday, June 2, 13:30-14:30, Innovation Square 1
Regenerating Full Productivity (RFP) is a pioneering, farmer-led metrics system designed by the European Alliance for Regenerative Agriculture (EARA) to measure agricultural performance beyond just yield. It evaluates ecological and economic outcomes—such as soil health, biodiversity, and input reduction—showing that regenerative farms can deliver 33% higher RFP than conventional systems.
Key Aspects of the RFP Index (2020-2024 Study):
Multidimensional Metrics: RFP moves beyond yield-only focus to include whole-year photosynthesis, soil cover, biodiversity, and economic viability.
Performance Results: Research on 78 European farms revealed that regenerative farms averaged 27-33% higher RFP, with some gains reaching up to 52%.
Environmental Benefits: These farms achieved 17.1% higher total photosynthesis, 17.2% higher soil cover, and maintained average surface temperatures 0.3°C cooler in summer compared to conventional neighbors.
Input Efficiency: Regenerative farms achieved yield parity while using 61% less synthetic nitrogen fertilizer and 76% less pesticide per hectare.
The EARA study offers a transparent, science-backed framework that can be used by policymakers and financiers to reward farmers for ecological outcomes, such as through improved CAP payments and climate-related finance tools.
